There is an old expression I was just reflecting upon, "the tapestry of our lives", which
refers to the sum of one's earthly existence as a single work of weaving. Certainly our
every experience represents some minute feature of the work. But overall, it's our
associations which represent the threads of consistency throughout the pattern. These
people whose lives crisscross our own, create the fundamental texture for the fabric.
Small wonder that my grandmother used to caution me to spend my time with only the best
of society. I sometimes regarded her as an elitist, a snob. But this lesson she tried to
impart was not totally unheeded: For although mine is not the richest tapestry by far,
I may be deserving of some award for the most colorful!
